Book Review:
A good book impresses the reader by various different stages. The cover always holds the first impression, even though good readers shouldn’t actually judge a book by its cover. Then comes the one line description – a single phrase or a short set of phrases where the main concept of the story is revealed. Third comes the book’s summary in its back cover – which has to be simultaneously riveting enough to make the reader want to take the book up, and still manage to retain enough suspense. ‘The Lives Between Us” covered all these with great ease, at least from my perspective. I only looked at the cover and the summary before I decided to choose this book for review.
The plot is deceivingly simple enough – a dedicated woman reporter who has commitment issues cannot come to terms with her young niece’s death. She feels it could have been prevented if only the Senator of the state of Michigan had not blocked the researches in Embryonic Stem Cells. She wants to make him pay for his jaded religious beliefs, or so she assumes. But complications arise as she falls in love with someone close to her nemesis and sees the man himself battle personal losses without his glorifying Senator tag. The decisions she takes alter the course of the story.
There is no real comment to be made on the progression of the story because it is fairly straightforward, simple enough and with enough twists and turns to keep the reader hooked to it. There are no over the top larger than life moments, or unexpected villains. It is a book about good people who are fighting their own battles and clashes of interests. The story is written in linear progression with not many flashbacks.
The language is clean, simple and without many jargons. The story doesn’t need much editing, thankfully. The author has managed to write a good book without unbelievable characters. Each character has their own pluses and minuses and the flaws are as acceptable as the generous moments.
Without commenting on the plot line, there are parts of the story that could have brought certain characters out in better light. But that would have ruined the realistic tone of the story.
Overall, a good read for lovers of clean writing and beautiful stories.
Rating: 4.5/5
