REVIEW:
Pocket Love Story! When the author sent me this book for review, I was already informed that this would be a very small story that would take me less than an hour to read. Consisting only of 60+ pages, this book has won the award for being the shortest novel. In an era where everything has a regular size version and a pocket sized version, this book seemed like the need of the day.
This is a campus love story that is in a first person narrative. The story is about Ramchandra Chauhan, who is a college student. In his class he sees a beautiful woman who takes his breath away. He falls in love with her looks and being the introvert that he is, is unable to speak to her. He stares at her and when she is absent for a few days enquires about her. She confronts him about it. Slowly a friendship develops between them and she takes almost all of the first moves in the soon to be relationship. But once she starts actually being friendly, he is confused as to whether or not what he feels is really love or just friendship. What happens next forms the rest of the story – which is very short, actually.
The pros are beautiful typesetting and design fit to read in mobile devices. I read this PDF in the Adobe app of my android mobile and did not have any difficulty whatsoever with the size of the font. It is rare that a book comes out with such beautiful formatting. Kudos to the authors and publishers for making reading this book a pleasant experience. Also, the first page, i.e., the title of the novel was so cute and it was in fact the deciding factor for me to take up and finish it in one go (roughly twenty five minutes). And another major positive – this is just a very long ‘short story’. At least that is how it feels – like a well developed short story that chronicles a longer time period.
As to the cons, there are a few points I would like to mention. The concept is new. A lot could be said in a pocket novella. It is a love story that could have been a great entertainer but falls flat on two accounts. The language needs a lot of development and there are obvious proofing errors. The story itself could have been developed in a better manner. Except for the last page that was a nicely worded twist, much of it was just like a journal entry that was written in running words. Little bit of editing and polishing could have done wonders on this novel.
On the whole this novella made me wonder about two things. The first one was why didn’t more such books get published? In this fast paced world, these books (especially if they are presented in such a delightful way) could be selling like hot cakes. And what could have prompted both the authors and publishers to come up with this novella that was short even for being one!
PRICE: Rs. 80 for a paperback. (Yes, really!)
