SUMMARY:

Where are you on your priority list? A key question in measuring self-care. Uncover your own customized strategies for moving further up that list as you bring this thought provoking and interactive book to life around your own kitchen table. Connect with friends and get your sense of self back with doable self-care strategies. Author Lorrie Forde invites you to break all the old rules about not writing in books—this one is yours to write in, reflect back on, and share as you choose. Make it work for you! This is not another thing to add to your ‘to-do’ list. Let the pages do the work and before you know it, you’ll be laughing with friends, reconnecting with your passion, and the envy of your peers as you figure out what ‘feeds you’ and where your ‘weak spots’ are. How long will it take till you’re using “F” words all the time and your cookie jar is overflowing? Analogies like this cookie jar and using really good “F” words help us to laugh at reality and a little laughter really can make all the difference.

REVIEW:

In the recent past, 'the F word' has been used widely as a phrase to denote an offensive and rude word. While the word itself is used more often that it was a few years ago, to denote a varied list of feelings and emotions, there can be no doubt in anyone's minds that the moment they read the phrase 'F word', their mind automatically goes to that one word. So did my mind. But in making me think about 'really good F words', the author has indirectly showed me just how quickly I, like many people, jump to conclusions and assume things without information. I knew that the title was a play on words. But before I began reading the book, I tried naming a few 'F words' that were not offensive. And yes, I came up with only a very few, with 'Food' topping the list.

And then I began reading the book. I do not want to reveal what exactly the 'Really Good F Words' are, but they are surely words we should think of more often. The book had me at the beginning 'Doing the Groundwork' chapter. Yes, the title did get my attention. But this is not the self help book that I would open, read, get enlightened by and close and get on with my life. This felt more like it was intended as a work book of sorts where the readers could jot down thoughts, notes, goals and lists. While this was a really good way to get people involved, I personally found it a bit comical to write everything down. (It was a 'feeling' I got over by the time I was nearing the middle of the book, though. It started sounding 'fun'.)

As to the other aspects, the cover is a warm blue and interesting enough. The author has tried to inject humour into the book and has obviously decided laughter works better in getting the reader involved. I enjoyed the experience as a whole. The language was simple, though very attractive. Special mention must be given for the little boxes where important points, stories and other things were highlighted. The font and the content of these boxes were something I looked forward to. Overall, I liked the approach the book had taken and also the practical but inspirational real life events. The book was so similar yet so unique when compared to other books of this genre.

WHAT I LIKED:
  • The Title
  • The Author's approach to writing
  • The little boxes with notes.
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER:
  • This book won't interest you if you are not a fan of this genre. This is not for every casual reader
VERDICT:

If you are on the lookout for a funny, clean self help book that could get you out of your dull routine and get you working in a new direction, this book might just be the thing you need.

RATING: 4/5

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

  1. Dhivya, Thanks so much for your review. I appreciated all of your comments and was especially drawn to your reference about the "little boxes with notes". It was important to me that my voice came through in the book and those little boxes were a way for me to make that happen. Thanks again and btw....Food was one of my good F words too. :)
